Edmonton’s next municipal election is scheduled for October 18, 2021. With an overhaul of our waste management systems underway, a new mayor being elected, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic still affecting our services, it’s important to ensure waste-related issues are part of the election discourse.
Waste Free Edmonton wants to ensure every voter knows where the candidates stand on waste. We will send the list of questions set out below to every declared mayoral or council candidate and encourage them to send us their responses, and share the responses on our website and social media.
Our survey questions to City Council candidates:
- What are your thoughts on waste reduction on both a personal and a societal level?
- What are your thoughts on the City of Edmonton’s waste management system and what changes would you advocate for?
- Do you support the City of Edmonton implementing a strategy and/or bylaw that restricts single-use items? Do you support using Waste Free Edmonton’s Proposed Framework for the City of Edmonton’s Single-Use Plastics Bylaw as the basis for developing a single-use reduction strategy and bylaw? Why or why not?
We are calling this campaign 3 For YEG (#3ForYEG). Our idea is simple: for our organization with one main goal — waste reduction — three questions asked of every candidate should let their future constituents know where they stand on waste. Edmonton is host to a number of fantastic organizations and special interest groups, and the passionate citizens that care about these issues should know as much as possible leading up to October. We encourage you to reach out to these candidates personally with any further questions on the topic of waste management, and to get involved with their campaigns if you support their vision for the City of Edmonton. Candidates that are listed as “Answered” have responded to us and promised a completed survey; “No response” means they haven’t replied to us at all.
