Waste Free 101 was an educational program focused on the negative impact and lifecycle of single-use plastics. It consisted of an in-school visit facilitated by a trained Waste Free Edmonton volunteer. We had the pleasure of visiting division I, II, and III classrooms to discuss the importance of reducing the amount of single-use item/plastic waste we create, as well as the impacts of single-use items/plastics on human health, wildlife and waterways, and the environment. At the end of the presentation, students had the opportunity to write to their mayor and councillors. Some of their letters were read to City Council during the special utility meetings, where Waste Free Edmonton proposed a framework and pushed for change with a Single-Use Item Bylaw, which has been passed! This program was well received by teachers and students alike, and was even covered by CBC Edmonton! While we are no longer facilitating this presentation, we are happy to share our script and slides with you for continued use in your classroom.
